Police at Jenda in Mzimba District have apprehended seven individuals for allegedly possessing cannabis sativa.
Police in the district carried out an operation on Tuesday night which led to the arrests.
“This comes as part of the police’s effort to address drug abuse among the youth,” said Macfarlen Mseteka, the Public Relations Officer for Jenda Police Station.
According to Mseteka, the initiative was carried out due to complaints from teachers in schools around Jenda, reporting instances of students arriving at school while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Samson Dangwe 40, Mustafa Ayami 32, Chisomo Nyirongo 21, Rodwell Banda 20, Davison Nyirenda 24, Frank Kaunga 30, and Ostine Banda 26.
Upon the arrest, the suspects were found with varying amounts of marijuana which were ready to be sold to customers, including learners.
The suspects are facing charges of being found in possession of cannabis sativa without a licence as well as the intent to sell or distribute the illicit substance.
All suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
