Government says the long-awaited Salima-Lilongwe Water Project is set to begin in November as Khato Civils is finalizing equipment mobilization.
During a site visit to the Lifuwu water intake point, Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia said the project aligns with President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s commitment to improving the welfare of Malawians by providing quality water.
“Well, actually, we’re very excited to see that a lot of the equipment has arrived… mobilisation is almost complete. Slight delays were encountered because most of the equipment had to be custom-made for this particular project. So we are good to go,” said Mia.
Mia emphasized that the project aligns with President Lazarus Chakwera’s commitment to improving citizens’ welfare, as part of the ‘Super High Five’ agenda and SDG 6 goals for clean water access by 2030. She also highlighted job creation for local communities through the initiative.
Once completed, the project is expected to improve water supply as it will serve 100 million liters of water every day, benefiting surrounding communities like Chipoka and Kaphatenga.
