Community Mobiliser for Pakachere Institute for Health and Development Communication, Shingirai Ndilowe, has appealed to religious leaders and chiefs in the country to take a leading role in combating gender-based violence (GBV).
Speaking on Saturday in Zomba during an interface with chiefs, religious leaders, and community police, Ndilowe stated that the government and civil society organisations cannot address all the issues surrounding GBV on their own, hence the need for collaborative efforts.
Malawi Assemblies of God pastor for Thondwe, Elias Njaweta, praised Pakachere for the meeting, which he described as an eye-opener.
Senior Chief Mlumbe has since promised to ensure zero GBV in his area.
Zomba Social Welfare Officer, Christopher Ndaona, noted that by involving chiefs and religious leaders, there is a high chance for the district to achieve its aspiration of zero GBV. Zomba is one of the districts in the country registering high cases of gender-based violence.
With funding from UN Women, Pakachere is implementing a gender-based violence project in Thondwe, Zomba.
