National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) believes the launch of the Political Empowerment of Women 2024 to 2030 Strategy will increase women’s representation in Parliament and local council levels.
Last week, Minister of Gender Jean Sendeza, launched the 2024-2030 National Strategy of Political Empowerment of Women at Linthipe Secondary School in Dedza District.
NICE’s Executive Director, Gray Kalindekafe, said this is inline with the Malawi 2063 which emphasises promotion of gender equality, addressing inequalities, and ensuring women’s participation in decision-making.
Reacting to the development, Member of Parliament for Machinga East, Esther Jolobala, who represents the United Democratic Front, urged Malawi’s development partners to continue supporting women during and after campaigns.
National Coordinator for the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace, Boniface Chibwana, described the Political Empowerment of Women 2024 to 2030 Strategy as timely since the 2025 elections are fast approaching.
Chibwana said the strategy has also touched on social and cultural challenges.
In Parliament, there are 40 females out of 193 members.
