NGORA publishes list of non-compliant NGOs

The Non Governmental Organisations Regulatory Authority (NGORA) has published a list of non-compliant NGOs in one of the local dailies as part of efforts to enforce registration and reporting.

NGORA says it issued a directive for all NGOs to comply with registration and reporting requirements by 31 December 2024. Furthermore, NGOs that have not obtained a valid licence for 2025 must do so by 31 March 2025 to continue operating legally.

“Failure to comply will result in NGOs being deemed non-existent in Malawi. Secondly, NGORA will take action against those operating illegally, including imposing fines, taking them to court, and restricting their access to banking services,” says NGORA.

To strengthen compliance, NGORA says it is working with banks, local councils, and immigration authorities to ensure that only legally registered NGOs can access financial services.

“NGOs are legal entities, not individuals. Their key identification is their registration certificate and licence. Banks and service providers have the right to verify whether an NGO is legally recognised before offering any assistance,” NGORA Chief Executive Officer Edward Chileka Banda said at a recent presser in Lilongwe.

NGORA further says concerns raised by communities and other stakeholders regarding a lack of transparency and possible misuse of resources by some NGOs should stop. The authority is determined to prevent such malpractice by ensuring that only compliant and accountable organisations continue to operate.

With these measures in place, NGORA expects improved compliance in 2025, ensuring that NGOs operate transparently and effectively in their mission to serve Malawians.
