Malawi Police Service, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, has trained stakeholders in Karonga District on strategies that can help prevent political violence ahead of the tripartite elections scheduled for September next year.

Participants included officials from the Immigration Department, religious leaders and local chiefs.

Deputy Director responsible for Community Policing and Rural Police Units in the Malawi Police Service, Albert Nyongani, emphasised the importance of focusing on Karonga due to its history of political unrest.

Karonga District Peace and Unity Committee Chairperson, Reverend Josophine Mwakanena, said the training has equipped them with knowledge and skills to prevent violence in the district.
