Second Grade Magistrate Stanford Majoni of Phalula Magistrate Court in Balaka District says the introduction of mobile courts in the district brings the law directly closer to the people.
Majoni said such initiatives help to raise legal awareness among local communities that are often not conversant with the law, particularly on matrimonial disputes and marriage-related issues.
He said the mobile courts are helping communities understand how the law works and the proper channels for addressing disputes.
Group Village Headman Nkomwa commended the Centre for Alternatives for Victimised Women and Children (CAVWOC) for bringing the initiative.
He observed that many women suffer abuse from their spouses but fail to report their challenges due to fear and lack of knowledge about their legal rights.
Wakisa Mhango, Project Officer for CAVWOC in the district, said the organisation, in collaboration with Oxfam Malawi and with funding from Oxfam Hong Kong, is implementing the initiative.
She explained that the initiative reduces the need for community members, especially those from marginalised areas, to travel long distances to access court services.
