MNT promotes sustainable tobacco farming

Media Network on Tobacco (MNT) has urged farmers to adopt live barns, commonly known as ‘Dzigafa za Moyo’, as they prepare to harvest their tobacco.

This innovative method is seen as a crucial step toward mitigating the environmental impacts of climate change, MNT urges in a statement.

According to MNT, the tobacco industry has significantly contributed to deforestation in Malawi, with approximately 26 percent of the country’s deforestation linked to tobacco production the highest rate globally.

In addition to promoting live barns, MNT is advocating for tobacco farmers to plant more trees to replace those felled during cultivation.

President of MNT, Alfred Chauwa, said trees play a critical role in environmental conservation and foliage from some trees like Nsangu enhance soil fertility.

“Trees are vital components of our environment. They protect crops from heavy winds and some trees like Nsangu fix nitrogen in the soil. At the current deforestation rate and impacts of climate change, it is only a wise thing to use live barns in tobacco farming and curing,” said Chauwa in the statement.

Chauwa also said that while tobacco remains Malawi’s leading forex earner, measures must be taken to protect both the trade and the environment. He stressed the importance of balancing economic gains with sustainable practices to safeguard the country’s natural resources for future generations.
