Minority groups urged to lead in development

Senior Chief Chimombo of Nsanje has urged women and people with disabilities to take the lead in driving development to enhance socio-economic progress in the country.

Chimombo made the remarks on Friday during a training session for Area Development Committee (ADC) members in the district. The session aimed to mobilise communities to support women and people with disabilities in assuming key roles in development.

Chimombo pointed out that many women and people with disabilities do not participate in development activities due to a lack of opportunities.

Chairperson of Nsanje District Council, Mike Kafalachi, observed that women and people with disabilities have long been marginalised in developmental initiatives.

Juliet Mzava, a participant from the Makoko Area Development Committee, described the training as an eye-opener, acknowledging that women and people with disabilities are often perceived as incapable in their communities.

WOLREC, with support from the European Union, is working in seven districts in Malawi to address critical gaps in leadership exposure and preparation for political participation. The initiative aims to provide access to decision-making structures, such as ADCs, ensuring that women, youth, and persons with disabilities can actively participate in politics and governance.
