The Minister of Labour, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, has given Hao Li, a plastic shoe manufacturer, a seven-day ultimatum to rectify labour law violations or face closure.
During an inspection visit, Engineer Mumba observed several breaches, including employees working 12-hour shifts instead of the standard eight, a lack of designated break times, and the absence of compensation for workplace injuries.
Additionally, some factory workers were found doubling as security personnel for the company owner, whose residence is within the same compound.
Expressing disappointment, the minister condemned the exploitation of Malawian workers, noting that some senior employees at Hao Li had been diverting part of the labourers’ wages for personal gain.
“If the company fails to meet labour standards within the given period, we will have no choice but to shut it down,” warned Engineer Mumba.
The ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting regular inspections to protect workers’ rights and ensure compliance with labour laws.
