Mera lifts ban on use of jerry cans

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has lifted the ban which was imposed on fuel service stations, barring consumers from buying fuel using jerry cans.

In a statement, Chief Executive Officer for Mera, Henry Kachaje, said the decision to allow the sale of up to 20 litres of fuel in jerry cans aims at providing increased convenience to consumers, particularly those with smallscale fuel requirements for machinery, generators and emergency fuel needs.

However, Kachaje was quick to emphasise the need for all consumers to adhere to safety standards and guidelines during the dispensing and handling of fuel in jerry cans to mitigate any potential risks or hazards.
