Malawi Prison partner NGOs to improve inmates’ well-being

Malawi Prisons Service has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a consortium of three organisations to enhance prisoners’ health and well-being in all prisons across the country.

The organisations are the Irish Rule of Law International (IRL), Theatre for a Change (TfaC) and Paralegal Advisory Service Institute (PASI).

Commissioner General for Malawi Prison Services, Masauko Ng’ombeyagwada Wiscot, confirmed this and emphasised that the agreement will promote and protect the rights of prisoners in the country.

“These organisations has been helpful to Malawi Prisons Service by teaching prisoners how to represent themselves in court and most of our remand prisoners have been granted bail, a development that has addressed issues of congestion in our prisons,” Wiscot said.

Country Director for Irish Rule of Law, Susie Kiely, highlighted that the agreement will strengthen access to justice and enhance the rule of law as well as strengthen advocacy network so that the rights of inmates are not hindered.
