The multi-billion Kwacha corruption case involving former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor Dalitso Kabambe and his former deputy Henry Mathanga is set to be heard in court today.
Kabambe and Mathanga are joined by Joseph Mwanamveka, former Finance Minister, and Cliff Chiunda, former Secretary to the Treasury, following a plea from state prosecutors to add the two to the case for a joint prosecution.
The court is continuing to examine evidence and the requests made by the state lawyers, with the defence lawyers opening with a cross-examination of the plea to include Mwanamveka and Chiunda in the proceedings.
Kabambe faces charges including abuse of office and laundering approximately K8.3 billion, with K4.3 billion allegedly paid to FDH Bank without prior approval.
Mathanga is facing similar charges, while Mwanamveka is accused of involvement in illegal transactions related to the former Malawi Savings Bank (MSB) which according to arguements, was sold at a song and falsifying the central bank’s documents. Chiunda faces charges related to financial misconduct uncovered by a forensic audit conducted by Deloitte at the request of President Dr Lazarus Chakwera in 2021.
The court proceedings will resume later this afternoon.
