Over 5,000 tobacco bales confiscated for nesting violations

The Tobacco Commission (TC) has confiscated over 5,000 tobacco bales for containing loose leaf and stems, among other prohibited objects.

According to the commission, nesting remains a significant challenge in the tobacco market.

The Tobacco Industry Act (2024) defines nesting as the concealment of stems, scraps, loose leaf, or any object within a bale to deceive a buyer about the quality or quantity.

The commission has confiscated 1,481 bales from Kasungu Auction Floors, 2,460 bales from Lilongwe, 297 bales from Limbe, and 842 bales from Mzuzu.

This issue was highlighted during a visit to grading centres and factories in Kanengo, Lilongwe, where confiscated bales are being regraded before being sold under the TC number.

TC Spokesperson, Telephorus Chigwenembe, said that proceeds from such bales will be held by the commission until relevant administrative penalties are enforced, after which the owners (growers) will be informed of the outcome.

Malawi has realised over $396 million from over 133 million kilogrammes of tobacco sold at an average price of $2.35 between April and July this year.

Last year, the country realised $282 million after selling 120 million kilogrammes at an average price of $2.35.
