The government of Italy has committed €4 million (approximately K7.6 billion) through the World Food Programme (WFP Malawi) to boost school meals in Chikwawa District.
The funds will support over 20,000 learners across 17 primary schools. The programme will be done in partnership with the ministries of agriculture and education.
Speaking during the signing ceremony in Lilongwe, Ambassador of Italy to Malawi and Zambia, His Excellency Enrico de Agostini, said the funding aligns with Italy’s broader support for education and food security.
“We are committed to supporting school feeding programmes that not only address immediate hunger but also promote long-term development goals,” said Agostini.
“We believe this contribution will strengthen the link between agriculture and school feeding, while building sustainable local food systems,” he added.
WFP Interim Country Director, Simon Denhere, described the funding as a timely boost to children’s welfare and rural development.
“This partnership is not just about meals; it’s about investing in children’s futures and supporting local farmers,” said Denhere.
In his remarks, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Geoffrey Mamba, said the government welcomes Italy’s contribution.
“This is a major step towards universal school feeding and improved community resilience,” he said.
On her part, Deputy Director of School Health, Nutrition and HIV AIDS in the Ministry of Education, Maureen Maguza Tembo, said that the investment in education will have a positive impact on basic education.
She said: “This partnership is a stepping stone towards securing a better future for our children, ensuring they receive both nutrition and education, which are key to their overall development.”
The support comes under the Home-Grown School Meals Initiative, which links schools to local food producers to enhance nutrition and rural livelihoods.
