‘No case of kits malfunctioning’

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has dismissed as baseless allegations that its voter registration kits have malfunctioned.

MEC Chief Executive Officer Andrew Mpesi addressed the issue during a meeting in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

The meeting, attended by Civil Society Organisations and the media, was held to provide updates on the progress of the electoral process ahead of next year’s polls.

Mpesi clarified that the registration devices are operating smoothly, as expected.

“We have received no case that these kits have malfunctioned. It is incorrect. The kits are performing just well,” Mpesi said.

People’s Development Party President Kondwani Nankhumwa, who is also Member of Parliament for Mulanje Central Constituency, had claimed that several people in his constituency had been unable to register due to faulty devices.
