Prime Minister of the Republic of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson is visiting Mangochi today to appreciate developmental projects that his government has supported Malawi since 1989.
Mangochi District has benefitted a lot from the multi-billion development projects that Iceland has been funding in Malawi for 35 years now.
Since 1989, 35 schools in Mangochi have received infrastructural and logistical support, with over 2 million school blocks, 8,000 furniture distributed to students and teachers.
In 2001, Iceland funded Malawi to construct Monkey Bay Community Hospital, which included new female and male maternity ward, surgical theatre , and two ambulances.
In 2007, Iceland started a water and sanitation programme in most areas across Mangochi, and a total of 8000 latrines, 606 boreholes, as well as 420 shallow wells were constructed.
In 2019, Iceland started constructing a state-of the art maternity ward, with an operating theatre at Mangochi District Hospital.
In 2023, Iceland funded Malawi government for the construction of the new Makanjira maternity wing, which include a life-saving operating theatre, antenatal labour and post-natal wards, as well as a high dependency unit for newborns. The maternity wing will provide 120,000 inhabitants with life saving services for mothers and children.
