The Government of Malawi has procured 51 million litres of petrol and diesel from the United Arab Emirates to ease the ongoing fuel shortage in the country.
The challenges have been partly attributed to the political situation in Mozambique, which has disrupted the transportation of fuel products from the Port of Beira to Malawi and neighbouring countries.
Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, along with a delegation from the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) and the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), is currently at the Port of Tanga in Tanzania, where the ship has docked and discharged the fuel into storage facilities.
According to NOCMA’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Micklas Reuben, this is an emergency procurement facilitated through the Government-to-Government Framework.
Reuben said that the vessel is carrying 29 million litres of petrol and 22.5 million litres of diesel.
Meanwhile, at least 40 trucks are scheduled to load and depart from the Port of Tanga on Saturday.
