GOVT FOR STRICT MEASURES TO ENHANCE REFORESTATION

Government has urged people to take responsibility for reclaiming lost vegetation by refraining from activities that hinder the progress of reforestation and afforestation.

Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Michael Usi, made the call during the launch of the Nkhata Bay Watershed Restoration Programme at Phwechi under Sub Traditional Authority Thula in the district.

Usi asked people involved in cutting trees, especially those that have government licences in timber trading to avoid cutting premature trees or face the law.

On his part, the District Commissioner for Nkhatabay, Rodgers Newa said community engagement is one of the initiatives that the council has undertaken to reclaim vegetation and mitigate issues of deforestation in the district.

The launch of the program was held under the theme: “Restoration for Flourishing and Sustainable Watersheds.” with support from Floresta, a Christian-based organization.
