Govt committed to bolster ICT

Government has received a $115 million (approximately K199 billion) grant from the World Bank for transformation in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Digitalisation, Baldwin Samuel Chiyamwaka, revealed this on Wednesday in Lilongwe during MACRA’s open day.

He said the country has $10,000 (about K17 million) from the UNDP and K8 billion dedicated to completing the last mile of fibre works.

He then called for collective effort to harness the power of technology for Malawi’s socioeconomic development.

“A lot of money is being invested in the ICT sector because it is the wish of the government for Malawi to be in that trajectory. It is one of the enablers in the Malawi 2063 agenda,” he said.

MACRA’s acting Director of Postal Services, Burnet Namacha, said there is a need for stakeholders in the communication sector to actively participate in the open day to share ideas on how best they can grow the sector.

MACRA’S open day, which started in Blantyre on 15 July 2024, will conclude in Mzuzu next week.
