First Lady in Geneva for TB Summit

First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, is in Geneva, Switzerland, attending the World Health Summit in her capacity as Tuberculosis Ambassador for Malawi and the SADC Region.

She is attending the event at the invitation of the Stop TB Partnership and will participate in a side event on breaking barriers and using digital technology for early detection of diseases.

She is also scheduled to make an official address at the summit on Wednesday.

According to the World TB Report (2022), TB claimed 1.3 million lives, including 167,000 individuals living with HIV in that year alone.

In Malawi, 26,000 individuals with TB were reported in 2021, resulting in 3,000 deaths.

However, the country has seen remarkable improvements, with reports indicating a decline from 338 cases per 100,000 population in 2010 to 125 cases per 100,000 population in 2022.
