First Lady calls for girl child education support

First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera has reiterated the need for Malawians to support underprivileged girls and boys in their quest to get an education.

Speaking in Lilongwe at the Presidential Together for Tomorrow Appreciation Dinner, Madam Chakwera highlighted the efforts by stakeholders to assist children whose parents or guardians cannot afford to support their education.

The First Lady said Shaping Our Future Foundation has reached over 2,700 needy students so far.

Nonetheless , she expressed the foundation’s desire to extend support to over 5,000 needy girls by the year 2026.

Madam Chakwera said despite the effort, there is still a big gap as over 15,000 children need support.

Speaking earlier, Janet Chidothi of Plan Malawi thanked the foundation for being a beacon hope for hopeless children.

Winnie Kiombo, a beneficiary of the initiative, shared her personal story, recounting how her mother struggled to pay her school fees until the foundation stepped in to support her. With their assistance, Winnie successfully passed her MSCE and was admitted to the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES).

The event also recognised the achievements of more than 25 students — beneficiaries of the foundation, who have been admitted into public universities. They were awarded prizes for their academic success.
