Expect stable power supply during elections — ESCOM/EGENCO

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) and Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) have reassured Malawians that they have put in place all necessary steps to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply during tomorrow’s tripartite elections.

Speaking at a joint press briefing for ESCOM and EGENCO in Blantyre, ESCOM Chief Executive Officer Kamkwamba Kumwenda said ESCOM is still appealing to other large-scale power consumers to temporarily suspend production during peak hours on election day and a few days after polling day.

While acknowledging that the request may present challenges to some businesses, ESCOM emphasised that the election is a matter of national importance.

The corporation said it will continue to engage with other companies to highlight the collective benefits of the temporary adjustments.

Chief Executive Officer for EGENCO, Maxon Chitawo, said as of this week, the generation company has put on hold all the  routine maintenance works for their machines in order to operate at full scale.

He has also hinted  at the availability of all responsible personnel to ensure smooth operation of the machines throughout the election period.

Meanwhile,  ESCOM and EGENCO have  appealed for public understanding and cooperation as far as distribution of electricity is concerned during the period.
