Education is key for Malawi’s Economy

Director of Secondary Education in the Ministry of Education, Florida Banda, has reaffirmed that education remains crucial in unlocking the country’s economic transformation.

Banda made the remarks in Lilongwe during the Standard Bank and Press Trust Merit Scholarship Funds handover ceremony for the second tranche of scholarship funds.

She emphasised that the fund plays a key role in complementing Malawi’s 2063 development blueprint and urged the private sector to support the initiative, citing the significant demand for assistance in the education sector.

Standard Bank’s Head of Brand and Marketing, Tamanda Ng’ombe, said that the bank has committed K51 million for the 2024-2025 academic year to support 46 secondary school students across the country.

One of the Trustees for Press Trust, said that the partnership between the Trust and Standard Bank has the potential to transform education, significantly contributing towards Malawi’s 2063 aspirations. She further pledged to continue complementing the government’s efforts in fostering education.

The partnership between Standard Bank and Press Trust for the secondary education merit scholarship fund commenced in 2019, with the first tranche running until 2023. The second tranche, scheduled to run from 2025 to 2028, is projected to cost over K200 million.
