Don’t abuse social protection funds, Mzimba communities told

M’mbelwa District Council Social Welfare Officer responsible for Social cash transfer, Shadreck Mingo, has appealed to beneficiaries of Mtukula Pakhomo and Lean Season funds in the district to use them prudently.

Mingo was speaking on Tuesday at Kabuwa Primary School in Traditional Authority Khosolo’s area in Mzimba at the start of disbursements of over K4 billion to beneficiaries.

There are over 13 000 people who are benefiting from the programme in Mzimba South.

“We don’t therefore expect you to squander the funds on beer and other useless things but on useful things such as businesses that will sustain your lives and your families,” he said.

Each household is receiving funds for Mtukula Pakhomo and others are receiving K150,000 to cushion them from hunger. In total, people are receiving over K200,000.

Victoria Chisi of Chimbalame Village, T/A Khosolo, said she will try to put the money to good use.

“Some of us are receiving the funds for the last time and we need to put to good use. As for me I have been running a business,” she said.
