Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) says it has secured 6,000 metric tons of relief maize from government to prepare for potential disaster responses. Additionally, the department has sourced non-food relief supplies to support its emergency response efforts.
Director of Preparedness and Response at DoDMA, Moses Chimphepo said this during the opening of a three-day SADC Regional Peer Learning Exchange Workshop held in Blantyre. The workshop, hosted by WFP Malawi and DoDMA, has drawn participation from representatives of Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, and the World Food Program, among others.
Chimphepo said the relief items are being pre-positioned in areas prone to disasters to enable quick and effective life-saving interventions.
Deputy Country Director for WFP Malawi, Simon Denhere called for strong coordination among countries and organizations in responding to emergencies to ensure smooth process of reaching out to victims.
Anderson Banda, Director of the SADC Humanitarian Operation Center in Beira, Mozambique, urged SADC member states to share resources and collaborate on disaster response capabilities.
