Elderly man drowns in well

A somber mood has engulfed Kamatawo village in Mzimba following the death of 71-year-old Martin Msikwa, who drowned in a well on Friday night.

Jenda Police Station Public Relations Officer Macfarlen Mseteka says the deceased, who suffered from epilepsy, went out of his house to answer nature’s call and never returned.

Concerned about his absence, his wife raised an alarm, prompting fellow villagers to go on a search.

His body was found earlier today, floating in a well approximately 200 meters away from the village.

“The matter was reported at Jenda Police Station, where officers together with medical personnel from Jenda rural hospital visited the scene. Post-mortem done by the said hospital revealed that death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning. No foul play suspected,” he said.

Jenda Police Station has since called upon community members to exercise caution, especially when using toilets in wet areas.

Heavy rainfall in the region has compromised various structures, heightening the risk of accidents.
