DC advises social cash transfer beneficiaries to buy maize

District Commissioner for Zomba, Reinghard Chavula, has advised beneficiaries of the social cash transfer programme to use the money they have received meaningfully by buying food.

Chavula made the appeal on Saturday during the launch of the lean season response of cash to the beneficiaries of the social cash transfer programme.

She said as part of cushioning people from hunger and improving their livelihood, the government decided to give cash of Mk140,000 to each of the beneficiaries, instead of Maize.

” On top of this lean season support, households will also receive their regular transfers which is a huge contribution from government to the people,” Chavula said.

The DC then said beneficiaries should not be carried away by the huge sums of money but rather consider its purpose.

Thom Mapepemba of Traditional Authority Chikowi hailed the government for the timely support.

Mapemba said the money received will enable him to buy food and maize seeds to be planted in his fields.
” This is something that I never expected, the support has come at the right time when I needed it most. I salute the government for the response, ” he said.

According to the DC a total of K3.2 billion has been allocated for the exercise and about 19,730 social cash transfers will receive the lean season cash support.
