Police in Mangochi have arrested Kefas Peter Kanyama, 51, who has been on the run since 12 December 2024 after he fired two live ammunition in the air without provocation.
Mangochi Police publicist, Amina Tepani Daudi, says Kanyama approached Koche Roadblock in a white Toyota Fortuner and unexpectedly discharged a Greener rifle and a pistol and fired multiple times into the air.
Daudi adds that Kanyama allegedly threatened to locate and shoot a certain Traffic Officer, prompting the two police officers and Malawi Revenue Authority officials on duty to attempt an arrest. However, the suspect fled the scene in his car, sparking a manhunt.
On 27 December, law enforcers tracked down his vehicle at Mangochi Township and apprehended him.
A search of the vehicle yielded a Greener rifle loaded with one bullet and a revolver pistol with ten live bullets. Kanyama failed to produce valid documents for the firearms.
Kanyama is facing charges for possession of unlicensed firearms and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and he will appear in court to answer the charges.
