Director General of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Daud Suleman, has urged consumers to use established channels when airing grievances against service providers.
Speaking Friday during the World Consumer Rights Day commemoration held at Gymkhana Ground in Zomba, Suleman noted that many consumers resort to social media to express dissatisfaction with services being provided by service providers instead of contacting MACRA directly.
“Grievances that are submitted through MACRA are attended to,” he said. “It’s encouraging that some people are using our toll-free number 261.”
Suleman further emphasized that it is every consumer’s right to enjoy digital services and assured the public that MACRA is committed to protecting them.
Head of Home Broadband at Airtel Malawi Limited, Patrick Mleya, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to consumer protection.
“As Airtel, we’re committed to ensuring that our customers are not exploited. We aim to provide them with the best services they deserve through various channels we have implemented,” Mleya said.
Meanwhile, consumer representative Mavuto Chakaya applauded MACRA for organizing the event, saying, “We have been fully equipped with knowledge about our rights as consumers and how to handle challenges we face when using digital services.”.
This year’s World Consumer Rights Day is being commemorated under the theme “Fair and Safe Digital Spaces for Consumers.”
