Chikulamayembe wants more marginalized groups in political leadership

Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe says empowering the youth, women and people with disabilities is critical to the attainment of Malawi 2063.

Chikulamayembe made the remarks on Wednesday when he met representatives of Oxfam, Women Legal Resource Centre and Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre, who are lobbying for a more inclusive democracy, at his headquarters at Bolero in Rumphi.

He said women are more compassionate and just as thorough as men or even better when handling different tasks and that there is need to have more women and youth in leadership positions in order to transform the country.

The Chief added that the visit by the delegation was in line with the 2024 Gonapamuhanya ceremony’s theme of empowering women and youth for development.

Executive Director for Oxfam, Lingalireni Mihowa said they visited the Paramount Chief to request him to help lobby for a conducive environment for females, youths and people with disabilities interested in running for political office in 2025.

Mihowa added that once these are confirmed as torch bearers for various positions, they will receive a cash transfer for mobilization and electoral monitoring activities in addition to public speaking and political mobilization training, among others.
