CHAKWERA CONDOLES BEREAVED FAMILIES IN CANOE TRAGEDY 

Minister of Water and Sanitation Abida Mia has visited a dock called Phokera on the Shire River in Nsanje District where 23 people are missing and feared dead after a canoe they were sailing in capsized yesterday around 7 am.

So far 13 people have been rescued and a body of a one-year-old boy was recovered.

Mia said  PPresidet Dr Lazarus Chakwera is deeply shocked by the tragedy and has since condoled the bereaved families with K2 million.

The government has also bought coffins for the bodies.

Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje, Gladys Ganda, has expressed concern with the increased number of hippos in her area and asked the government to relocate them.

In his response, the District Commissioner for Nsanje, Dominic Mwandira, said the efforts to search for the survivors are underway.

This is the second incident after six months where seven people were reported dead.
