President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has called for renewed commitment from United Nations member states, with a view of improving existing international relations and development efforts.
Addressing delegates at the 79th UN General Assembly (UNGA), the Malawi leader acknowledged the pouring support that developed countries have been channelling towards Malawi during the time it has been devastated by disasters, a period which saw Dr Chakwera declaring state of disasters in four subsequent years.
Touching on the subject of debt, Dr Chakwera said Africa is reeling from the burden of international debt and as such, developed countries should consider their plight through debt relief and debt restructuring.
In his carefully-crafted speech that lasted close no more than 15 minutes, President Chakwera buttressed the fact that rich nations are key drivers of the prevailing climate change crisis through emissions.
He therefore urged them to be more forthcoming with their compensation efforts.
General debate of the UNGA will continue through Saturday, September 28, 2024.
