A better Malawi is possible – Chithyola Banda

Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Simplex Chithyola Banda, has urged Malawians to unite and take actionable steps toward transforming the nation into a prosperous economy.

Chithyola-Banda made the remarks during  his closing remarks at the 2025/26 Pre-Budget Consultation at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

The Minister reflected on the insightful contributions made during the consultations, acknowledging the diversity of voices from representatives of various sectors of  the economy. He emphasised the importance of crafting a budget that resonates with the aspirations of Malawians, stating, “It’s time to move beyond being labelled as ‘beautiful but poor nation.’ We must rewrite this narrative by leveraging our resources and talents.”

Chithyola-Banda stressed the need for fiscal discipline and innovative approaches to economic growth, citing mining, climate-smart agriculture, and energy-efficient solutions as potential game-changers.

“Time has come for us to focus our energy and efforts on new ways of growing and developing our economy,” he said.

He also touched on the importance of managing natural resources sustainably, particularly in mining and forestry, to ensure long-term economic benefits.

“We need to monetise our resources effectively to impact GDP and improve livelihoods,” he added.

Calling for unity, Banda urged all stakeholders to be part of the legacy of transforming Malawi.

“Together, we can build an economy that reflects the dreams of every Malawian,” he concluded, officially closing the consultation session.
