Civil society organizations (CSOs) from Malawi’s Southern and Eastern regions have reiterated calls to depoliticize the plane crash that claimed the lives of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima and eight others on June 10 last year.
During a press briefing in Blantyre, Sammy Aaron, representing Eastern Region CSOs, expressed disappointment over continued politicization of the tragedy, despite a commission of inquiry concluding that the crash resulted from human error and environmental factors.
“The report came out clear and everyone knows what caused the crash, however, there are some political leaders in the country who are bent on finger-pointing to divide Malawians. This tendency must come stop. Malawi is a peaceful nation,” Said Aaron.
Southern Region Civil Society Organizations representative, Caesar Kondowe, urged the government and relevant stakeholders to act on some of the recommendations from the inquiry.
“The report unveiled some negligence gaps in the aviation sector and have called for the government to take action on those who failed to execute their job,” said Kondowe.
The CSOs also urged Malawians to remain peaceful and united as the country prepares for the general elections in September.
