CHOLERA OUTBREAK IN MULANJE

The Ministry of Education has urged school authorities in Mulanje and surrounding districts to strictly follow hygiene practices to contain the cholera situation, which is on the rise in the district.

Ministry of Education Public Relations Officer Mphatso Nkuonera said they await guidance from the Ministry of Health on whether to close the affected schools.

He however emphasized the need for all stakeholders to work together in fighting the spread of the outbreak.

Meanwhile Co -Chairperson of the Presidential Task Force on Covid 19 and Cholera, Dr Wilfred Chalamila Nkhoma, has confirmed that Mulanje has recorded 61 cholera cases, with 9 recorded in the past 24 hours.

He said the Taskforce will work with the Ministry of Water and Sanitation so that people have potable water following reports that the available water in the area is salty.

Health facilities that have been highly affected are Mulomba, M’biza, and Mpala health centres.
