President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has pledged to ensure that all public buildings in Malawi are made disability-friendly by 2030, addressing the current lack of accessibility and consideration for people with disabilities in public spaces across the country.
Dr Chakwera said this at Kamuzu Palace during the launch of the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) flag week which is aimed at creating awareness and raising funds for the organisation’s programmes and activities and he bought the first flag at K2 million.
He said he will lead by example by using some of the resources meant for the state residences to make the public places disability inclusive.
The President has called on all private and public institutions to rise to the challenge by addressing accessibility issues in their spaces, ensuring they are disability-friendly.
MACODA Board Chairperson, Alex Dzinkambani, has since applauded Dr Chakwera for the move.
During the event the organisation has officially rebranded to Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) from Malawi Council for the Handicapped (MACOHA).
The years flag week is being held under the theme: Empowering Disability Rights Paving The Way for an Inclusive Malawi Towards Malawi 2063.
