Woman caught trying to sell own child

Police at Jenda in Mzimba District have arrested Brenda Jere, 27, for allegedly offering to sell her 11-year-old son for K2 million at Khosolo in the district.

Jenda Police publicist, Macfarlen Mseteka, says the arrest was done with the help of members of community policing on Saturday and she has since been charged with selling a child, contrary to section 82 of the child care, protection and justice Act.

Mseteka says it is alleged that Jere had received K150,000 on her mobile money carrying a message that it was “miracle money” and she was being invited to join “a church”.

However, shortly after receiving the money, she became unwell and was unable to join the church. The owner demanded repayment and in desperation, she resorted to selling her son to settle the debt.

Jere who hails from Satiele Jere Village, Traditional Authority Khosolo in Mzimba District, will appear in court soon.
