30% of Standard 2 learners to read meaningfully by 2027 — Ministry of Education, NextGen

Ministry of Education and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Next Generation Early Reading (NextGen) project, expects 30 percent of Standard 2 learners to start reading meaningfully by 2027.

The Ministry’s Director for Quality Assurance, Golden Msilimba, said this on Thursday in Blantyre at the launch of this year’s National Teacher Training which is being conducted in all 522 Teacher Development Centres.

Msilimba said the aim of the training is to reinforce teachers’ loyalty to instruction in the implementation of the National Reading Programme.

The program is 5 years long and it is expected to reach 23,685 Standard 1 and 2 teachers from 34 education districts in Malawi.

Teachers are being trained on five core reading components which include teaching techniques and effective use of time.

The programme was launched in 2022 and is expected to end in 2027.
