2019 Women’s manifesto brings change

NGO Gender Coordination Network believes the 2019 Women’s Manifesto has been a catalyst for change in the country as it has promoted gender equality and empowered women.

Chairperson of the network, Maggie Kathewera Banda, made the remarks in Lilongwe during a regional Women’s Manifesto Movement meeting.

According to Kathewera Banda, one of the key achievements is the appointment of a cabinet with a 60/40 gender ratio, as stipulated in the Gender Equality Act.

She highlighted that the manifesto led to the appointment of women in key roles, including the Speaker of Parliament, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, and Inspector General of Police.

Country Coordinator of Rural Women Assembly, Alice Kashoti, said the manifesto has helped women in Malawi to take up leadership positions in different area development committees, among others.

The two-day Women’s Manifesto meeting has been organised by Women Legal Resources Centre and various other organisations.
