17 women in Rumphi have expressed interest in running for parliamentary and councillorship positions in the General Elections scheduled for September 16, 2025.
This was disclosed on Tuesday during a Promoting Gender Transformative and Youth Inclusive Democracy stakeholders and aspirants meeting in Rumphi aimed at connecting women and youth aspirants to relevant offices to handle challenges they may face including intimidation and violence.
One of the parliamentary aspirants for Rumphi East Constituency, Thandie Kondowe said women are facing various challenges including resource constraints and intimidation from their male counterparts.
She hailed the European Union-funded project’s commitment to helping women aspirants with campaign resources to reach more people with their campaign messages and perform well.
A representative for the Women Legal Resources Centre which is implementing the project in Rumphi, Julie Simbeye, urged various stakeholders such as police, chiefs and others to provide a conducive environment for women to compete.
Currently, Rumphi does not have female representation at the council and parliamentary levels where all eight councillors and members of Parliament are men.
