Voting has started well- MEC

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Chifundo Kachali, says casting of votes in the poll for Ward Councillors in Kaporo, Chilanga, and Rukuru in Karonga District has started on a good note.

He was speaking at Lulindo Primary School polling centre when he commissioned the voting exercise.

Vicar General for Karonga Diocese, Lorent Dziko, who is an observer of the elections, said he is optimistic that the low turn-out will improve as the day progresses.

Meanwhile, Kachale has urged voters to be mindful of time as the new electoral law allows voters to cast their votes up to 4 pm and not 6 pm as it was before.

The parties taking part in the by-elections in all three wards are MCP, DPP, Umodzi, UDP, UTM, AFORD, and four independent candidates.

67, 213 voters are expected to cast their votes in 45 polling centres.
