Rumphi District Council has elected Councillor Happy Chirambo of Mwazisi-Hewe Ward as its new council chairperson.
Chirambo, an Independent candidate, succeeds councillor Harry Munyenyembe of Chinyolo-Mphompha Ward.
Chirambo beat councillor Mazire Chibambo of Henga-Phoka Ward by five votes to four.
In his acceptance speech, Chirambo promised to improve working relationships with others, including communities and to foster development.
The council has also elected Alick Munthali of Mayembe Ward as vice chairperson.
