Police arrest Mwanamvekha, four others in Salima Sugar syndicate

National Police publicist, Peter Kalaya, has confirmed the arrest of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) MP and former finance minister Joseph Mwanamvekha as well as four others in connection with a Salima Sugar 2023 Audit, which established embezzlement of billions of Kwacha at the company.

According Kalaya, the others include former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) CEO Collins Magalasi, former Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) Lloyd Muhara, former secretary to Treasury Cliff Chiunda and Jimmy Kusamale, ex-Greenbelt initiative company secretary.

He says the arrest follows similar arrests of other Salima Sugar top officials last year on the same issue. He also indicated that one of the suspects, Henry Njoloma, who is former acting CEO for Greenbelt Authority, is at large.
