Phiri cracks down on corruption in councils

Minister of Local Government Ben Phiri has cautioned council officials against engaging in corruption and the abuse of public resources.

Phiri made the remarks in Dowa District during an orientation for Central Region council stakeholders, including councillors.

He observed that rampant plunder of public resources continues to delay development, ultimately depriving citizens of much-needed progress.

“It is well known that corruption is rampant, and it is important that councillors understand their roles and responsibilities within councils,” said Phiri.

He further urged councillors to adopt innovative strategies to enhance revenue collection in their respective councils.

Vice President of the Malawi Local Government Association, Maloto Chimkombero, said councillors are committed to upholding accountability measures to curb the leakage of public funds.

The World Bank, through the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) programme, has provided financial support for the initiative.
