Parliament calls for restructuring of loss-making corporations

Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts has called for a restructuring of some statutory corporations to reverse their loss-making trajectory.

Among the statutory corporations are ESCOM, with losses exceeding k8 billion, Lilongwe Water Board with K800 million in losses and Malawi Housing Corporation, which reported a K1.5 billion deficit.

Chairperson of the Committee, Mark Botomani also bemoaned the failure by entities like ESCOM and the water boards to collect outstanding debt on services offered.

Botomani was presenting a report on the performance of statutory enterprises to parliamentarians for the year ending 30 June 2021

He has urged the statutory companies to ensure that they do not neglect tax and pension remittances for their employees.
