MW, MOZ JOINT TASKFORCE TO INVESTIGATE TRUCK DRIVER ASSAULT CASE

The Malawi Consulate in Tete Province has expressed concern over the viral video of a Malawian truck driver being assaulted by Mozambican Police at Zobue Border Post.

The Consul General, Happy Madikah Saka, said he contacted the Mozambican authorities to investigate the matter, following instructions of the Malawi Ambassador to Mozambique, Wezi Moyo.

Saka quoted the police commandant for Tete Province as saying that he was, ‘shocked and dismayed’ by the incident and promised to take ‘swift and appropriate action’ against the perpetrators.

The Consul General further said that his office, in collaboration with Mwanza Police, ensured that the driver received medical attention.

It is alleged that the driver overstayed in South Africa and was returning to Malawi without the required papers. However, a joint committee on the case said that this was ‘no excuse’ for the ‘inhumane and unacceptable’ treatment he received from the Zobue Police.

Saka also said that he spoke to the Mozambique Consul General responsible for South and Eastern Regions in Malawi, Eugine Matusi, who expressed his ‘regret and apology’ for the incident and assured him that they were ‘following up on the issue’ and ‘working together to prevent such occurrences in the future’.

The Malawi Consulate in Tete Province said that it was ‘committed to protecting and promoting’ the rights and interests of Malawian citizens in Mozambique.
