Lingadzi, Mpingu Police Stations set for facelift

Hulder Global Foundation has committed K50 million towards the renovation of Lingadzi and Mpingu Community Police Stations in Lilongwe.

Hulder Global Foundation Director and Matron Apostle Huldah said this is aimed at improving sanitation and living conditions for people held in police custody.

The project is currently in progress of refurbishing cells, toilets and kitchens, as well as improving car parks and the landscaping at both stations and it will be completed in 2027.

Apostle Huldah pledged an additional K6 million towards the construction and renovation of children’s and women’s cells and toilets at the stations.

“The foundation says the facilities should not be viewed simply as places for criminals, but as holding places for suspects awaiting trial, who remain innocent until proven guilty,” he said.

Lingadzi Community Police Station Officer-in-Charge Charles James Mpezeni said the station faces overcrowding and inadequate toilet facilities, with about 18 to 21 people currently held in its cells per month.

Mpezeni said the renovation will improve sanitation and conditions for people in custody.

Mpingu Police Station’s toilets were damaged by heavy rains in 2024, acording to the Officer-In-Charge, James Mbaghuli.
