I will not resign — Mtalimanja

MEC Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja says she is not going to resign as demanded by opposition political leaders and some electoral stakeholders.

Mtalimanja made the position clear at an engagement MEC had with CSOs in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

The opposition is demanding her resignation, claiming she is an affiliate of the Malawi Congress Party, one of the contestants in next year’s poll; and therefore her independence and neutrality in the poll is highly compromised.

However, Mtalimanja denied the accusations and stressed that she belongs to no political party contesting in next year’s poll.

“I am not MCP. I am a judge of the High Court duly chosen by the Judicial Service Commission,” she explained.

“As a matter of principle, I am not resigning as MEC chairperson. I am not being arrogant. All I am saying is that, as a matter of principle, I am not.” She said.
