Healing Hands, an arm of Church of Christ has donated 50 cartons of fortified rice packs worth K1.5 million to Rumphi Prison, which has 300 inmates, to ease food challenges.
Director of Healing Hands for Malawi, Mbwenu Chirwa, said this on Wednesday that the organization was moved to assist after learning that many prisons in the country experience food shortages.
The packs are blended with soya pieces and a number of nutrient supplements such as vitamins and energy.
Health Coordinator for Rumphi Prison, MacDonald Matope said while the Prison provides food for prisoners, there is always a gap as they cannot meet all prisoners’ needs.
Matope said the packs will help reduce cases of malnutrition among inmates at the facility and keep them healthy.
One of the inmates at the facility, Noel Mkandawire, said the packs are an early Christmas present for inmate and thanked Healing Hands for the donation.
Each of the 50 cartons contains 36 rice packs and in total 1800 packs have been donated.
